Valve recently released its 25th anniversary documentary on Half-Life and how the game came to be. As the team recalled the early stages of the game’s development, Gabe Newell emphasized why delaying the game was important (timestamp 28:43).

    Key Highlights
    • Valve looks back on Half-Life’s 25th anniversary.
    • The team discussed the development challenges of the game.
    • Gabe Newell emphasizes on why game delays are important.

Late is just for a little while. Suck is forever. Right? We could to force this thing out the door, but that’s not the company we want to be. That’s not the people we want to be. That’s not the relationship we want to have with our customers.”

Interestingly, this may sound familiar, as Shigeru Miyamoto has “quoted” the following words: “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” Speaking of Miyamoto, Gabe Newell has expressed admiration for him and has credited Miyamoto’s games for enhancing his own development skills.

While there’s no denying that delays can improve the quality put into games, there’s still one question that still needs to be answered: Where is Half-Life 3? Besides some concept art, it’s been at least 16 years since we got any official confirmation on the third entry in the franchise. Perhaps, we can expect a little tease once Half-Life 2 turns 20. One can still wish, right?

In other news, Half-Life is free for a limited time on Steam till November 20 so get it while you still can. After all, this is the game that became a masterpiece despite the delays and made the company what it is today. Not only is the game free, but it has been updated with new content and improvements as well.

What a waste of what was once potentially a great franchise. Just license the IP if you aren’t going to make a new one.
