Capcom Should Give Resident Evil Revelations The Comeback It Deserves

It's time the company should give Resident Evil Revelations 3 a chance.

One cannot overlook Capcom’s dominance in horror with the Resident Evil series. The latter-day Resident Evil Remake titles scored well for their faithfully reinvented and enhanced versions of the original games. While I relished the technical excellence of the remakes, I think it is pertinent for Capcom to now turn its gaze to the side-spinoff Revelations series. Here’s why a return to Revelations would be different and possibly refreshing.

    Key Highlights
    • The recent Resident Evil Remake titles were a massive success in terms of sales and reception for Capcom.
    • Despite the success, the company should revisit the Revelations games for a breath of fresh air.
    • This could also provide the opportunity for fan-favorite characters like Rebecca to return.

The Resident Evil franchise establishes that its core series’ games have a formula that balances both action and survival horror to tell a captivating narrative. As successful as the series has been in keeping this formula of action and survival horror, perhaps the return to Revelations’ more purist horror style is an ambition many share. Why do fans feel this way? The games offered a more self-contained experience.

In Revelations, for example, resource management was a problem for players and the complex puzzles made you think before you acted, much like how survival horror should do. It’s a different level of tension or horror; tension often comes from the player’s plan for managing ammo and healing items so they don’t die or cause a game over.

In addition to the stricter difficulty, the unique settings of Resident Evil: Revelations, like the haunted cruise ship or Resident Evil: Revelations 2’s decrepit prison, also allow the games to further differentiate from the typical mansion and lab settings that players are so used to. The feeling of claustrophobia on the ship and complete isolation in the prison are one of a kind and are terrifying, in their own right.

A Chance For Other RE Characters To Shine

There are also plenty of characters that are significant in the Resident Evil franchise, and Revelations provided a very different and specific chance to give a more in-depth look at these different characters that are unforgettable but underappreciated. Remember characters like Rebecca Chambers or Clive R. O’Brian? These characters got audiences excited and thinking in new ways about the lore of the franchise and how it all connects to the universe — it is substantial.

    The Importance Of Revelations Games

Don’t forget the importance of the Revelations games to the series in general. After Resident Evil 6 had mixed reactions and leaned more towards the action gameplay, Resident Evil: Revelations brought fans back to the survival horror experience they knew and loved, showing that Capcom still valued the original Resident Evil formula. It did well, re-ensuring fans of the series and in the future, potentially raising interest in more Resident Evil games.

A leak regarding a supposed project named “Outrage” for the Nintendo Switch, spread across the internet and excited the fans. “Outrage” was potentially Resident Evil: Revelations 3, which if it had come out, would have been the first game to carry the Revelations title to be playable on a handheld platform. Even though the game never came to be, the hype around “Outrage” has shown fans are still hungry for another Revelations game. I am a huge fan of the core Resident Evil series. I love playing the game for the action and tension of the stories told, but there is something special about the Revelations titles.

Having Revelation’s gameplay style being the focus of the next game would mean we get a new game, in a series of games that always felt separated — not having to rely too closely on the mainline series. It would allow fans of the core series like myself to be able to revisit the Resident Evil world without overpowering storylines and returning faces and new faces, allowing it to be a mix of nostalgia and new experiences. I hope Capcom takes this opportunity to revisit Revelations and allow fans a chance to dive back into the world of Revelations sooner rather than later.
